What is e-commerce or a webshop?

E-commerce simply means selling products or services through digital transactions online.

E-commerce simply means selling products or services through digital transactions online.

In plain English

This belongs to the buying journey. Customers do not experience your product page, cart, payment provider and confirmation email as separate systems; they experience one continuous purchase. The useful question is where confidence or momentum can be lost.

A real example

A webshop usually combines product information, a cart, checkout, payment processing, order records and customer communication.

The customer does not experience this as an isolated feature. It is one step in the same purchase and needs to feel as clear and trustworthy as the rest of the journey.

Why it matters

Each part of the buying journey can affect whether people feel comfortable completing the purchase.

Small points of friction matter more near a purchase because the customer is already making a commitment. Confusing costs, unclear delivery, a strange payment step or a missing confirmation can undo trust built earlier on the site.

When do you actually need to care?

You need to care when carts are being abandoned, support questions keep appearing around payment or delivery, customers are surprised by costs, refunds become messy, or the buying experience feels different on mobile. Near a purchase, small uncertainties can have a disproportionate effect.

Useful questions to ask

  • What does the shopper need to know before taking this step?
  • What could make a reasonable person hesitate or lose trust here?
  • What happens when payment, stock or delivery does not go as planned?

What should you do with this?

Test the whole purchase yourself on phone and desktop, including what happens when something goes wrong. The useful improvement is usually the one that makes the next step clearer and safer, not more decorative.

What this does not mean

Putting a Buy button on a page is not the whole e-commerce system.

The short version

Think end-to-end buying experience, not just products on a screen.
